How to Release Emotional Stress: A Somatic Approach

Emotional stress has a way of building up quietly … until it's not so quiet anymore. And so many of us are carrying more of it than we realize. It's a deeper kind of emotional weight that accumulates over time when our feelings don't have anywhere to go.

We feel it as overwhelm that doesn't lift even when things calm down. As thoughts that loop and won't settle. As a bone-deep exhaustion that sleep doesn't seem to touch, or as irritability and reactivity that seem to come out of nowhere and leave us feeling like strangers to ourselves.

If any of that sounds familiar, this is for you.

Why Emotional Stress Builds Up in the First Place

Most of us were never taught how to actually feel our emotions. From a young age, we learned to push through, keep going, manage, and cope. We learned, often without anyone saying it directly, that strong emotions were inconvenient, too much, or better left unacknowledged.

And we come by this honestly. Our culture tends to reward productivity and suppression over genuine emotional honesty. So we develop all kinds of ways to keep our feelings at a distance: staying busy, intellectualizing, minimizing, or simply soldiering on.

The problem is that emotions are not just mental experiences. They’re physical events that move through the body. When we don't give them space to be felt and processed, they don't simply disappear. They settle into the body, quietly shaping our mood, our reactivity, our energy levels, and our sense of ourselves.

Over time, that accumulation becomes what we experience as emotional stress: a heaviness we can't always name, a tension that lives just beneath the surface of everything, or a sense of overwhelm that seems to permeate everything.

This is a very human response to not having been given the tools to actually be with our own emotional experience. And it means that the path to releasing emotional stress is learning to meet it, feel it, and allow it to move through.

Why We Need to Actually Feel Our Emotions to Release Emotional Stress

Most of the ways we've learned to cope with emotional stress, like staying busy, thinking it through, and pushing past it, don't actually get to the roots of what's happening. The emotional energy underneath is still there, still stored in the body, and still quietly running in the background. And because it hasn't been felt or processed, it keeps finding its way to the surface as irritability, physical tension, exhaustion, or a sudden wave of feeling that seems to come from nowhere.

What most of us were never taught is that our bodies actually know how to process and release emotion. When we slow down enough to regulate our nervous systems and genuinely turn toward what we're feeling with curiosity and without judgment, our emotions can begin to do what they're designed to do: move through the body and release naturally. Our emotions carry information, and when we actually listen to what's underneath the stress, the body can metabolize the emotional charge rather than continuing to hold it.

This is why somatic healing creates change that lasts. It gives our emotions the conditions they need to genuinely complete their cycle in the body, so they stop running silently in the background of our lives.

Two Levels of Healing for Emotional Stress Release

To really release emotional stress in a lasting way, there are two levels of healing we need to address: I call them the autonomic level and the autobiographical level.

Autonomic healing refers to shifting our nervous system state. So much of our emotional stress is held and amplified by a nervous system that is stuck in a stress response, running on high alert, unable to settle, and interpreting everyday experiences as threats. Until we address this level, it's very difficult to do deeper emotional work, because the nervous system simply isn't in a state where it feels safe enough to open.

Autobiographical healing refers to the actual feelings, memories, experiences, and emotions we each carry that need to be felt and tended to. This is the more personal, individual layer: the specific grief, anger, fear, or sadness that belongs to our own story and that hasn't yet had the space it needs to be genuinely witnessed and released.

True and lasting emotional stress release happens when we address both levels. We create safety in the nervous system first, and then we go deeper into the autobiographical material, the felt emotional truth of what we've been carrying. When both of these are met, the healing goes all the way down to the roots.

A Somatic Meditation to Release Emotional Stress

This guided somatic meditation was created to work on both of these levels, using two gentle and powerful somatic techniques.

We begin with Self-Havening, a somatic practice that uses gentle touch to help the nervous system release stress and come into a more regulated, receptive state. Self-Havening works directly with the body's stress response, helping to create the internal safety and settling that deeper emotional work requires.

From there, we move into Regenerating Images in Memory® (RIM), an incredible emotional processing modality that helps us drop beneath the surface of our conscious minds and access what is actually being held in the body. RIM works with the body's own wisdom and imagination to help us meet and process what we've been carrying emotionally, through genuinely feeling it in a body-centered, compassionate way rather than analyzing or talking about it.

Together, these two practices create the conditions for real emotional stress release. People often come away from this kind of practice feeling lighter and clearer, with more space inside themselves and more connection to who they actually are beneath the stress and the weight of all they've been carrying.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or like you've been holding more than you can name, this practice is for you.
