There's a quote I love that I see going around social media from time to time: "Go be your favorite self." And something really beautiful about that phrase that makes it land differently than the self-improvement messaging we're so used to hearing.

 
 



What Is Your Favorite Self?

Most of us have grown up with the idea that we should be striving toward our best self or our highest self. And while there's nothing wrong with growth, those concepts often come loaded with external benchmarks and invisible comparison points. Best self according to whom? Highest self by whose standard?

One of the things that causes us the most stress in life is trying to live up to an idealized image of who we think we should be. We measure ourselves against some imagined, perfected version of ourselves and find ourselves perpetually falling short. That kind of striving can quietly erode our relationship with ourselves over time, leaving us feeling like we're never quite enough as we are.

The concept of favorite self gently sidesteps all of that.

Your favorite self isn't defined by productivity or achievement or how well you're meeting anyone else's expectations. It's the most authentic, joyful version of you, shaped entirely by your own values and desires.

And because it's self-defined, no one can tell you who your favorite self is but you.



An Invitation Toward Authenticity

There's a real creativity and freedom that comes with the concept of favorite self. It has a completely different energy than best self or highest self - it’s more playful, more free, and more unique and individual. It’s a part of ourselves that isn't performing or striving or measuring up; it’s simply and authentically engaged with life.

Most of us know what that feels like, even if we don't always have easy access to it. Maybe it's a memory of a time when you felt fully in your strength, or when you were so genuinely absorbed in something that the self-consciousness just fell away. Maybe it was a moment of feeling deeply connected to yourself and to your life, not pretending to be someone else, just simply and authentically present.

Your favorite self isn't a new version of you to construct or achieve. It's more like a homecoming to something that was always there.

  • More and more, I trust the pull of my favorite self to draw me forward.

  • More and more, I choose me.
