Why You Never Feel Good Enough

Feeling unworthy, or believing that we're somehow fundamentally flawed, unlovable, or not good enough, is one of the most painful core wounds we can carry… And it's also incredibly common.

In fact, in my work as a somatic healing coach, I've found that some degree of unworthiness is almost universal, even though we rarely openly acknowledge it or talk about it.

This deeply held sense of unworthiness can shape so much of our lives, often without us even realizing it. It can be at the root of perfectionism, people-pleasing, self-doubt, social anxiety, overthinking, overfunctioning, and self-sabotage, just to name a few.

And many of these patterns are actually self-protective strategies we've developed to help us avoid the painful feelings of shame, rejection, and inadequacy that live underneath them.

But here's something I really want you to understand: these deeply held feelings of unworthiness can heal. Even if you've carried them for decades, even if they feel like an undeniable truth about who you are, it's possible to change these old emotional patterns at their roots.

And one of the most powerful ways I know to do this is through compassionate, body-centered parts work and somatic emotional processing.

Understanding the Roots of Unworthiness

You may have spent years working on your self-worth. Perhaps you've tried affirmations, positive thinking, therapy, or changing the way you talk to yourself. And while these approaches can be helpful, you might still find that deep down, something inside you continues to feel unworthy.

There's a reason for this.

From a somatic perspective, our deepest feelings and beliefs about ourselves are often part of what I call implicit narratives. These are deeply conditioned, largely subconscious feelings, beliefs, and expectations that develop through our lived experiences, especially our early experiences of love, safety, and connection.

These implicit narratives often develop long before we have the perspective or emotional maturity to understand what's happening to us. We absorb our experiences at a feeling level, and over time, they become deeply ingrained in our subconscious psyches, bodies, and nervous systems.

And this is why unworthiness can feel so deeply true. We don't just think we're unworthy. We can feel it in the way our stomach tightens when someone seems disappointed in us, the shame that washes over us when we make a mistake, or the anxiety we experience when we're afraid someone might reject us.

These implicit narratives shape how we perceive ourselves, other people, and the world, often before a single conscious thought even forms. And because they're held at such a deep, largely subconscious level, changing them often requires us to work with the underlying emotional experiences, rather than simply trying to change what we think.

The Younger Parts of Us That Carry Unworthiness

One of the most important things to understand about healing unworthiness is that these deeply held feelings and beliefs are often carried by younger parts of ourselves that are still holding the emotional pain of earlier experiences.

When we begin to connect with these younger parts of ourselves, we may discover feelings that have been living within us for decades. The pain of not feeling loved or accepted for who we were. The shame of feeling that something was fundamentally wrong with us. The loneliness of having needs and feelings that weren't understood, welcomed, or cared for.

These experiences can be deeply vulnerable and overwhelming, especially when we're young and don't yet have the emotional resources or support to process them. And the parts of us that lived through those experiences may still be carrying that pain, along with the deeply held feeling that we're somehow not good enough.

This is why feelings of unworthiness can persist even after years of therapy, self-reflection, and personal growth. We may have developed a deep understanding of where these patterns came from and why they developed, but that conscious understanding doesn't always reach the subconscious feelings, beliefs, and emotional wounds that are still living within us.

And if these inner parts of you could have let go of their painful feelings and beliefs already, they would have.

They need us to connect with them in a deeper way, to listen to what they're carrying, and to offer the compassion, understanding, and support that may have been missing when those wounds first developed.

How Somatic Healing Helps Us Heal Feelings of Unworthiness

This is where somatic healing and body-centered parts work can be so deeply transformative.

Instead of trying to argue with our feelings of unworthiness or convince ourselves to believe something different, we learn to gently turn toward the parts of ourselves that carry these feelings.

We begin by connecting with what's happening in our bodies. Perhaps there's a heaviness in the chest, a tightness in the throat, or an uncomfortable sensation in the stomach.

And rather than immediately trying to make those feelings go away, we practice listening to them with curiosity and compassion.

As we deepen this somatic awareness, we may begin to sense the parts of ourselves that are holding these feelings, along with the painful experiences and unmet needs underneath them.

This kind of deep listening allows us to develop a very different relationship with our inner world. We begin to understand why these parts feel the way they do, and we can offer them the loving attention and support they've been needing.

And as these parts begin to feel seen, heard, understood, and supported, they can start to soften and release some of the emotional burdens they've been carrying because they’re no longer alone with these heavy experiences.

The feelings of shame, fear, and inadequacy that once seemed so overwhelming naturally begin to shift. And as we process these deeper emotional experiences, the implicit narratives and beliefs that developed around them can begin to change as well.

This is how we can begin to heal unworthiness at its roots, along with the self-protective patterns that have developed around it.

And there's something profoundly healing about developing this kind of compassionate relationship with ourselves. All of our inner parts long to feel safe, seen, understood, and cared for. And when we offer that loving attention and attunement to the parts of ourselves that have been carrying painful experiences for so long, we're giving them the care and emotional support they may have needed but never received, helping them finally feel seen, safe, and soothed.

This creates the conditions for deep emotional healing, allowing old wounds, feelings of unworthiness, and the protective patterns built around them to begin changing at their roots.

A Body-Centered Parts Work Meditation to Heal Unworthiness

In this guided parts work meditation, we'll be practicing this compassionate, somatic approach to healing using a technique called Regenerating Images in Memory®, or RIM.

RIM is a body-centered emotional processing method that helps us connect with the deeper layers of our emotional experience, including the feelings, memories, and subconscious beliefs that can be difficult to access through conscious thinking alone.

Through this meditation, I'll guide you to gently attune to the part of yourself that carries feelings of unworthiness, listen to what it's holding, and explore what that part may need in order to begin healing.

Rather than trying to force ourselves to feel worthy, we'll work directly with the deeper emotional experiences that have been keeping those old beliefs in place.

And through compassionate presence, internal imagery, and somatic emotional processing, we can begin to help these parts release the pain they've been carrying and experience themselves in new ways.

This is one of the things I find most beautiful about this work. We can begin to heal emotional wounds that have shaped our lives for decades, including the deeply painful belief that we're somehow fundamentally not good enough.

As we learn to listen to ourselves with greater compassion and understanding, we develop a more loving relationship with our inner world. And as our wounded parts begin to heal, the old beliefs and protective patterns that once felt so deeply ingrained can begin to change.

That's the deeper possibility of somatic healing: creating meaningful, lasting change from the inside out, by lovingly tending to the parts of ourselves that have needed our care all along.
