Real Self Care For When Life Is Difficult

First of all, if you’re freaking out right now, I want to extend my heartfelt compassion to you.

Life can be incredibly challenging, and it's okay to feel harrowed or anxious. (In fact, it’s okay to feel ANYTHING that you may be feeling right now.)

I'm not here to offer cliche reassurances or insist on disingenuous positive thinking. I’ve found those to be completely unhelpful when we’re going through difficult times.

The truth is that your strong emotions contain a deep intelligence within them. You’re freaking out because you care so deeply, or because the circumstances are just too overwhelming, or because something inside you is not okay with what’s happening. And that’s perfectly valid.

Instead of minimizing or suppressing these strong emotions, what we what you truly need is to support your nervous system and calm your racing mind.

The Vicious Cycle of Stress And Dysregulation

When things get overwhelming and we start freaking out, our nervous system reacts by going into a massive stress cycle. Primal parts of our nervous systems become dysregulated, triggering a significant stress response in the body and causing our thoughts to get stuck in a vicious cycle of worry and fear.

This makes us more distressed and less able to think clearly, affecting our whole body and how we see the world.

When this happens, our nervous system releases a flood of stress hormones, causing our minds to fixate on worst-case scenarios. This catastrophic thinking then leads to even more stress, creating a spiral that's hard to break free from.

When we’re freaking out, what we really need is to deeply support our bodies and calm our nervous systems. This helps quiet our catastrophizing thoughts so we can break the spiral and get our feet beneath us again.
