What Does It Mean To Resource Your Nervous System?
Resourcing is a somatic practice where we intentionally connect with a felt sense of safety, support, calm, or joy in our bodies in order to soothe ourselves and shift our nervous system state.
There are lots of ways to do this, but a simple and common one is to bring to mind people, places, memories, or experiences that naturally generate good feelings in our bodies. It might be someone who is easy to love, a favorite place in nature, a pet, or a memory that carries real warmth, whether something as small as lying in bed with the sun coming through the window or as significant as a peak experience.
The specifics matter less than the feeling.
A true resource is something that makes us smile or take a breath without effort. We don't have to manufacture it or talk ourselves into it.
The key is that we're not just thinking about these things. We're actually letting ourselves feel them in our bodies, and that's what makes this practice so different from anything we might do just in our heads.
Why Resourcing Works to Shift Your Nervous System State
Our brains are wired with what researchers call a negativity bias, meaning they are far more primed to detect threat than to register safety. This is useful for survival, but it also means that for many of us, especially those carrying stress or trauma, our nervous systems have become much better practiced at bracing than at resting.
Resourcing is a gentle, deliberate counter to that. It's a way of training our attention back toward safety by giving our bodies real, felt experiences of goodness to return to.
When we bring a resource to mind with our full sensory imagination, recalling the colors, the textures, the sounds, the feeling of it, our nervous systems begin to respond as though we're really there.
Research out of Yale and Columbia found that when people recalled their own meaningful experiences while inside an fMRI machine, their brains lit up in remarkably similar patterns to actually living those experiences.
So resourcing gives our bodies a real, repeatable experience of safety, and each time we offer ourselves that experience, our nervous system learns a little more that safety is possible. Over time, our baseline begins to shift. Things that once felt overwhelming start to feel more workable, and we find ourselves with more capacity to meet our lives and ourselves, with a little more peace and support.
Resourcing as a Foundation for Deeper Healing
This is also what makes resourcing more than just a feel-good practice. In the somatic healing world, resourcing is understood as something we do to build enough inner capacity to eventually meet harder material.
When we have a genuine felt sense of safety to return to, we have more room inside to be with difficult emotions and experiences without becoming flooded or overwhelmed by them.
We resource so that the deeper work has somewhere to land. This is why it's often where healing begins, and why returning to it again and again is a supportive way to actually make the hard stuff more possible to work with.
And this is why resourcing feels so different from positive thinking. We're not pushing difficult feelings away or trying to force ourselves into a particular mood. Resourcing is gentler than that. It's an invitation to turn toward something that already exists inside of us and let our bodies actually feel it, so that over time, we become a little more at home in ourselves.
About This Guided Somatic Meditation To Resource Your Nervous System
In this week's episode, I guide you through a somatic meditation that pairs resourcing with Havening, a gentle self-touch technique that has been shown to generate delta waves in the brain. Those delta waves help calm the amygdala, which is the part of our nervous system most responsible for driving our stress response. So, in this practice, Havening does some of the groundwork before we even bring a resource to mind, helping the body settle and become more receptive.
Then, when we layer resourcing on top of that, the resource has more room to land. We're not just thinking about a happy memory. We're feeling it in a body that's already a little more open and a little more able to receive it.
So, find a quiet moment, settle in, and let your body remember what it feels like to be supported.
