How to Heal Your Emotional Triggers (at the roots!)
Our emotional triggers show us what needs healing within
When we’re on a healing journey, our triggers can be invaluable guides.
Despite them being uncomfortable, inconvenient and sometimes overwhelming, when we know how to listen to them, our emotional triggers can guide us towards inner parts of ourselves that are calling out for healing.
If we know how to pay attention in the right way, they can tell us so much about our limiting beliefs, unprocessed emotions, past pain and subconscious blocks.
And learning to heal them deep at their subconscious roots can be one of the most transformational things we can do on our healing journey because that helps us connect with, integrate and heal the wounds from our past that have been affecting us and holding us back.
Understanding the roots of our triggers
When we’re emotionally triggered, a painful emotional memory from the past is flooding into our present moment causing us to have a bigger emotional reaction than what we would generally expect.
We all have unhealed wounds, unprocessed emotions and overwhelming experiences in our past that have left their mark on our psyches. And, when we’re triggered, it’s because one of these wounds from the past is being poked and that hurts.
It’s just like if you had a physical wound - maybe a cut or a raw bruise - when these physical wounds are touched, even lightly, it really hurts. But, eventually when they heal, they’re no longer so raw and sensitive.
When we’re triggered, an emotional wound that is still unhealed is getting touched, essentially. So, it can feel emotionally very raw or painful.
But, we’ve often pushed aspects of these old wounds into our subconscious, so, although we’re still carrying the pain or the charge of that wound within us, we’re not always consciously aware of exactly what still hurts within or how to resolve and heal that old pain.
That’s why learning to understand our triggers can be seen as an opportunity to face and heal those old wounds, so that we can move forward with more grace, wholeness, integration and healing.
Regenerating Images in Memory®
In today’s episode, I guide you through a Regenerating Images in Memory® exercise to help you connect with the parts of you that are carrying the wounds at the roots of your triggers. These parts of ourselves carrying these old wounds deserve healing and support and connecting with them like we’re going to do in this meditations is what results in our deepest healing.
Regenerating Images in Memory®, also known as RIM®, is a body-centered emotional processing technique that engages the imagination and taps into the emotional memory that’s held in our bodies and subconscious psyches so that we can drop below our conscious minds and heal the old wounds and past pains that are there in a deep and integrative way.
