Feeling Overstimulated? Here’s What's Actually Happening in Your Nervous System

There's a reason so much of daily life can leave us feeling frayed and exhausted, even on days when nothing especially hard has happened.

Our nervous systems weren't designed for the volume of stimulation we live with every day. The world moves so quickly, and news from all over the world, along with other people's opinions, feelings and crises, are being delivered to us constantly through our phones.

Notifications pull our attention in different directions all day, and it can start to feel like we have too many tabs open in our brains.

When all of this input keeps coming without a chance to relax and regulate, our nervous system doesn't get the space it needs to reset between one thing and the next. And so we end up stressed and dysregulated. We feel stuck and unable to relax even when we finally have the chance to. We have a nervous system that stays activated because it never gets the chance to come back down before the next thing arrives.

Our nervous system is always scanning

Part of why this happens comes down to what our nervous system is doing underneath all of it. Underneath our conscious awareness, our nervous system is constantly reading our environment for cues of safety or danger. This happens automatically, all day, without us ever deciding to do it.

In a quieter, slower world, this system had room to do its job well. But in a world of constant notifications, nonstop input, and a never-ending stream of sensory and emotional input delivered straight to our phones, that scanning system is working overtime.

This much input is more than our nervous system was ever designed to handle.

It reads the sheer volume and intensity of what we're taking in and treats it as something to brace against. The things we scroll past on our phones, the notifications, the opinions, the crises, all get interpreted as stressors, and our nervous system responds accordingly. It gets stuck in that stressed state, bracing against input that never really lets up.

Why the dysregulation doesn't just go away

Our bodies get the activation of stress and overstimulation, but they rarely get the discharge, the completion, that would let that energy actually resolve.

We move on to the next input before the last one has finished moving through us. So instead of resolving, it accumulates, quietly building on top of what was already unresolved from the day before.

This is what an incomplete nervous system cycle feels like from the inside. It’s often just a low hum underneath an ordinary day, the tension in our bodies, the irritability that shows up over something small, and the tiredness that doesn't lift even after we've rested.

How regulation helps our nervous system settle

This is why nervous system regulation matters so much. Practices that help us regulate give our body a chance to complete what's been left unfinished, rather than adding another layer on top of it.

And when we practice regulation consistently, our baseline begins to shift. We become less reactive, less overwhelmed, and more able to meet the demands of our day without carrying all of yesterday's activation into it. Our nervous system starts to learn that it's allowed to settle, and over time, that becomes more available to us, even in the middle of an overstimulating day.

This week's episode of Somatic Healing Meditations walks you through a gentle, naturally regulating breathing technique I call Body Scan Breathing, and it’s one of the quickest ways I know to help an overstimulated nervous system settle. I hope it helps you ground and leaves you feeling a bit more like yourself again.
