Guided Body Scan Meditation to Regulate Your Nervous System (Slow, Extended Version)

Our bodies are incredible. They hold so much wisdom if we're willing to slow down enough to listen. And one of the simplest tools we have for that is a body scan meditation, which is a soothing practice where we bring our attention gently to each part of the body, one area at a time.

It's a practice I come back to again and again because it's so regulating and relaxing.

This episode is an extended version of one of the most loved Somatic Healing Meditation episodes, the guided body scan meditation to regulate your nervous system. I made this longer, slower version because so many of you reached out asking for more time, more space to feel into each part of your body.

If you've done the original before, this one invites you to go even deeper. And if this is your first time with a body scan, this is a wonderful place to begin.

Why Body Scan Meditations Feel So Good

Body scan meditations are truly a lovely way to relax. They help us slow down, drop in, and settle into our bodies, and they're genuinely regulating for our nervous systems.

They also help quiet our minds. When we give our mind a clear, specific place to focus, one part of the body at a time, it gives our thoughts somewhere to land. As we move through each area, our mind naturally begins to quiet, simply because it has something concrete to rest on rather than being left to wander.

And giving our mind that kind of focus is what brings us back into our bodies too. We spend so much of our day living up in our heads, caught in our thoughts, our to-do lists, our worries about what's next, and we rarely stop to notice what's actually happening in our bodies while all of that is going on. A body scan gently helps us reconnect in a way that feels nourishing and supportive.

How Body Scans Help Us Regulate: Interoception

One of the ways that body scan meditations have been shown to help us regulate has to do with something called interoception. Interoception is our ability to sense what's happening inside our own body. It's the sense that lets us feel our heartbeat, our breath moving in and out, hunger, fatigue, tension, and the felt experience of an emotion as it rises.

Where our other senses tell us about the world around us, interoception tells us about our own internal state.

Most of us move through our days with this sense turned way down. We're so used to overriding what our body is telling us, pushing through exhaustion, ignoring tension until it becomes pain, that our capacity to actually feel what's happening inside starts to dull.

Practices like body scan meditations have been shown to increase our interoceptive capacity. Each time we bring our attention to an area of the body and simply notice what's there, we're training that internal sense to become sharper and more reliable.

And a stronger interoceptive capacity is linked to real benefits for our nervous systems. It's been shown to support our ability to regulate our emotions, because so much of regulating a feeling starts with being able to sense it in the body as it's happening.

It's also been connected to greater vagal tone, and the vagus nerve is central to how our whole system moves between activation and rest. The more responsive our vagus nerve becomes, the more easily our body can shift out of stress and settle into calm.

These benefits are cumulative. The more consistently we practice, the more our nervous system learns that this kind of attention is safe, and the more regulation becomes available to us over time. Each time we return to the practice, that learning deepens, one body scan at a time.

This Body Scan Meditation Is Here for You

This kind of practice doesn't ask anything complicated of us. It simply asks us to slow down, bring our attention inward, and let our body be met with the kind of gentle presence it's been waiting for. Each time we do, we're offering our nervous system a little more evidence that it's safe to settle, and over time, that evidence adds up.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or just wanting to slow down and settle into your body, this practice is here to support you. Give yourself permission to take these 35 minutes, find a comfortable place to lie down or sit, and let yourself be guided gently through each part of your body.

All you need is your breath, your presence, and a readiness to drop in and slow down.
