How Stress and Uncertainty Affect Your Nervous System
When the world feels jarring or scary or out of control, the weight of it is carried by our nervous systems, hearts, and bodies.
Even when we’re doing our best to stay informed, grounded, and resourced, the sheer volume and intensity of what’s happening can make it hard to feel settled or safe. Our nervous systems stay on high alert, our bodies become more and more tense, and over time, that constant state of readiness takes a real toll. Our nervous systems and bodies simply weren’t made to withstand this kind of ongoing onslaught.
I think many of us are feeling that right now.
And so many of us have learned how to keep going in the middle of this difficulty. We’ve learned how to compartmentalize, how to stay productive, how to tend to others, and sometimes that requires us to put our own inner experience on hold. These capacities are part of our resilience and strength.
And at the same time, they can leave us carrying more than we realize.
Why So Many of Us Are Exhausted Right Now
When we live in prolonged states of stress, uncertainty, and collective suffering, our systems adapt. We grow more vigilant, more braced, more oriented toward watching for what might go wrong … and even though that response is wise and protective, it can be incredibly draining.
Over time, this kind of ongoing strain changes how we relate to ourselves. We may feel less resourced, less grounded, and less able to access our own sense of inner calm.
That’s when body-centered deep listening becomes essential.
Body-Centered Listening for Inner Safety and Support
One of the most supportive things we can do in difficult times is to slow down enough to notice what is actually happening within us. To sense into our breath, our muscles, our posture, our energy. To feel where we are holding, where we are tired, where we are still trying to stay strong, and where something inside us might be asking for rest, reassurance, or simply to be acknowledged.
When we listen in this way, we begin to create inner safety.
And this safety isn’t because everything suddenly feels okay … it’s because we’re no longer abandoning ourselves in the middle of what we’re living through. We’re staying present with our own experience. We’re responding to ourselves rather than overriding ourselves. And we’re learning to offer ourselves support from the inside no matter what’s happening on the outside.
Over time, this kind of listening reshapes our relationship with ourselves. It helps the nervous system feel accompanied rather than alone. It helps the body feel met rather than ignored. It gives us a way of regulating, resourcing, and re-centering that is grounded in our actual needs.
In periods of sustained stress, this kind of inner relationship can be one of the most important forms of resilience we have. It’s what allows us to keep caring, keep feeling, keep showing up, without burning out or collapsing inward.
That is the heart of this meditation.
A Meditation for Inner Safety and Support When Life Feels Overwhelming
A Meditation for Inner Safety and Support (For When The World Feels Like Too Much) is an invitation into this deeper form of self-connection. It’s a space to turn inward and listen at the level of the body and nervous system. A space to notice what is living inside you right now and to respond to it with steadiness and care.
It’s a practice for the days when the news feels unbearable.
For the seasons when uncertainty feels endless.
For the moments when you realize you’ve been holding your breath emotionally for a long time.
If you’ve been carrying more than you know what to do with, this meditation is offered for you.
You deserve support … not only when things seem calm and manageable, but especially when they are not. You deserve practices that meet you where you are, that honor the reality of your nervous system, and that help you build a sense of safety and steadiness from the inside out.
This meditation is a deeply supportive way of doing that.
