Romanticize Your Life by Finding Your Glimmers

There is a gentle, healing practice available to us in every moment—one that can support our nervous systems, shift our perceptions, and nourish our souls. It’s the practice of romanticizing your life by finding your glimmers—of slowing down, noticing, and fully receiving the small moments that bring warmth, connection, or ease.

You may have heard of the idea of romanticizing your life, which encourages us to live more mindfully and appreciate the simple joys around us.

I love that concept and bring that practice into my life in small ways every single day!

There’s something deeply healing about learning to appreciate the ordinary moments that make up our days. But, some of the advice around romanticizing your life can feel a little bit superficial or inauthentic as if the goal is to curate a perfect, aesthetically pleasing life. And while those things can be lovely, the real transformation happens when we romanticize our lives from the inside out.

To romanticize your life in a way that heals, you don’t need to fabricate a perfect existence. You only need to notice—to tune into the small moments that are already here, waiting to be received.

This is where glimmers come in.

What are Glimmers?

Polyvagal theory expert Deb Dana describes glimmers as micro-moments of connection, safety, or joy—tiny signals to our nervous system that all is well. Just as our brains are wired to detect threats, they’re also wired to perceive cues of safety and ease. The problem is, that stress and overwhelm can make us hyper-focused on what feels wrong, pulling us away from the simple, quiet experiences that actually help us feel more alive.

But what if we trained ourselves to notice them?

The way sunlight warms our skin. The deep exhale that softens our shoulders. The flicker of kindness in someone’s eyes. The way music, touch, or the scent of something familiar can stir something tender inside of us.

These are the moments that romanticize life from the inside out—not by forcing gratitude, but by deeply receiving the beauty that is already here. Not by performing joy, but by allowing our bodies to register the real safety and connection woven into ordinary moments.

Finding Our Glimmers is NOT Toxic Positivity

Finding our glimmers is not about ignoring pain, pretending we’re okay when we’re not, or skipping past the real, hard, human experiences we carry. They are tiny moments of safety, beauty, or connection that our nervous system can actually receive.

When we notice a glimmer—a patch of sunlight warming our skin, the sound of a loved one’s laughter, the deep exhale that comes with feeling truly seen—we aren’t pretending that everything is perfect. We are simply allowing this moment to register in our body.

And when we let ourselves really take it in, something shifts.

Why? Because our nervous system is always listening.

Noticing glimmers helps remind our body that there is warmth, connection, and safety available to us right now.

Toxic positivity tells us to “just be happy.”
Glimmers invite us to notice what already feels a little bit safe.

Toxic positivity tells us to override our emotions.
Glimmers remind us that we are allowed to feel everything—and still touch into moments of ease.

Toxic positivity is about forcing joy.
Glimmers are about receiving what is nourishing.

When we orient to glimmers, we aren’t abandoning the hard things. We are just making space for all of what is here—including the tiny, fleeting, beautiful moments that remind us: I am still alive. I am still connected. I am still here.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, instead of asking yourself how you can “think better thoughts,” try asking:

— What already feels okay in this moment?
— What can I see, hear, or feel that reminds me I am safe?
— Where is warmth, connection, or ease showing up right now?

It doesn’t have to be big. A sip of warm tea. The way the light moves across the floor. A deep breath that lands a little easier than the last one.

Let that be enough. Let your body receive it.

This is how we heal—not by forcing ourselves into a different state, but by slowing down and gently widening our attention.

What if you let yourself fall in love with your life—just as it is?
