A Somatic Approach to Anxiety Relief

We live in a world that tells us to quiet our anxiety.
To suppress it. Out-think it. Override it with logic, positivity, or productivity.

But what if the most healing thing we could do…
is to feel it?

What if anxiety isn’t something to escape, but something to meet?

What I’ve come to understand - through my own healing and through the deeply sacred moments I’ve witnessed in others - is that anxiety is not a flaw. It’s not evidence that something is wrong with you. It’s a signal from somewhere deep inside, asking to be known.

And when we stop bracing against it, and instead turn toward it with tenderness, we begin to feel something we may not have felt in a long time:

Relief.
Softening.
Connection.

Not because we forced the anxiety away, but because we created the conditions for it to feel safe.

Anxiety Is a Message - Not a Mistake

At its core, anxiety is a communication - a signal from deep within your inner world. Like all emotions, it’s not random or meaningless. It carries important information.

When we pause to listen, anxiety often reveals something essential:
A need that hasn’t been met.
A boundary that’s been crossed.
A part of you that’s still holding on to fear from long ago.
A deep and real longing … for safety, connection, rest, or recognition.

It might speak in sensations more than words. In tension. In urgency. In the feeling of being too much or not enough. But if you can learn to sit with it, breathe with it, feel it without fleeing… you’ll begin to hear the deeper truth it’s carrying.

And when we meet anxiety not as a threat, but as a guide, something powerful begins to unfold:
We begin to understand ourselves. We begin to listen to the wisdom of our body. We begin to heal in an integrated and compassionate way - not by silencing our symptoms, but by learning from them.

So often, what we call “anxiety” is actually our inner world trying to get our attention. And when we turn toward it with care, we discover that it isn’t here to punish us. It’s here to get our attention, teach us, and reconnect us with what matters most.

In this way, anxiety can become an unlikely ally. Not something to get rid of, but something to befriend. A wise part of you, pointing toward the places that are ready for love.

The 4-Step Somatic Process For Anxiety Relief

These are the four steps I guide people through in this beautifully healing somatic meditation for anxiety relief. Each one is simple in concept, but profound in impact. Let’s explore what makes each one so essential to healing.

1. Feel the Anxiety in Your Body

So often, we try to think our way out of anxiety. But the body is where anxiety lives. And it’s also where it longs to be met.

When we bring our awareness into our body, we shift out of spiraling thoughts and into the present moment. We begin to feel instead of flee. And this moment of contact - of simply noticing - is often the first layer of relief.

Because when you allow yourself to feel the anxiety, you’re no longer abandoning the part of you that’s scared. You’re saying, I’m willing to stay. I’m willing to be with what’s real.

2. Turn Toward It

This is where healing begins. Turning toward anxiety is like turning toward a child who is scared or hurt - not to scold, not to fix, but to sit with, to witness, to love.

When we stop resisting anxiety and instead get curious about it, something inside us begins to feel less alone. Less braced. Less panicked.

It’s not about solving the anxiety. It’s about becoming a safe place for it to exist.

When you turn toward what hurts, you often discover something surprising:
It’s not as scary as it seemed.
It’s softer than you thought.
It’s carrying wisdom, not just pain.

3. Use Iffirmations to Normalize the Experience

So many of us feel shame around anxiety. We wonder: What’s wrong with me? Why am I like this? Shouldn’t I be past this by now?

That’s why this step matters so much.

In my practice, I use what I call iffirmations - gentle “What if…” statements that open the door to self-acceptance.

Instead of forcing positivity, we invite possibility.
What if there’s nothing wrong with me for feeling this way?
What if this anxiety makes sense in a way?

This step helps soften the inner narrative of shame and self-judgement. It reminds the anxious parts of you that they are not broken. They are responding, wisely, to something they’ve been through.

And that’s not a problem to fix. That’s a story to honor.

4. Understand the Message of It

Every emotion carries meaning. And anxiety, in particular, often holds an unmet need, a boundary crossed, or a part of you that never felt safe enough to exhale.

When we listen deeply, we begin to hear what’s underneath our anxiety. Sometimes anxiety is protecting something tender. Sometimes it’s pointing to something that needs our attention or care.

Understanding the message isn’t about decoding it perfectly.
It’s about slowing down long enough to ask:
What are you trying to show me?
What do you need from me now?

This shift - from silencing to listening - changes everything. Because when your anxiety feels heard, it doesn’t need to shout anymore.
