Quick Somatic Check-In: A Simple Way to Feel Your Feelings

A quick somatic check-in can be a simple way to come back into your body and feel what you’re feeling, so you can find more regulation, gain more emotional clarity, and reconnect with yourself in a loving, supportive way.

Most of us have learned, in very real ways, to disconnect from what we’re feeling. We’ve learned to push through, override, minimize, or ignore our inner experience in order to keep functioning in lives that are often noisy, demanding, and overwhelming. And over time, that becomes the default.

But this leaves us carrying more internal stress than we realize.

When we don’t tend to our feelings, they don’t just disappear. They get held in the body and begin to build, often showing up as tension, feeling on edge, overwhelm, or exhaustion.

When you pause and check in, even briefly, you start to notice what’s actually there instead of pushing past it. You might become aware of tension you hadn’t fully registered, or realize what you’re feeling underneath the surface of your thoughts. And as you stay with that, even for a few minutes, the body can begin to process it, which often leaves you feeling more settled, clearer, and with a better sense of what’s going on inside.

Why a somatic check-in can support healing

  1. What we acknowledge can move.
When we name our emotions (gently and without judgment), we give the body a chance to process them. A simple “I’m feeling overwhelmed right now” or “There’s sadness here” can help those feelings become clearer and easier to stay with, rather than remaining stuck at the edge of our awareness.

  2. It brings clarity.
Often, what feels like frustration on the surface may actually be exhaustion. What seems like numbness might be a kind of shutdown around sadness. When we turn inward, even briefly, we start to see more clearly what’s actually there.

  3. Our bodies feel safer when we listen.
Ignoring our emotions can create a sense of disconnection in the body. When we tune in with some care, that begins to shift. The body doesn’t have to stay as braced or guarded.

  4. Even small moments of self-connection support regulation.
A few minutes of noticing your breath, placing a hand on your body, or quietly acknowledging what you’re feeling can help your system settle. Over time, these small moments build a steadier sense of regulation, connection, and self-trust.

A guided 15-minute somatic check-in

In this episode of Somatic Healing Meditations, I guide you through a 15-minute somatic check-in to feel what you’re feeling.

We use Self-Havening, a gentle, neuroscience-based technique that uses soothing touch to calm the brain and body. It’s often used to reduce emotional distress and support a deeper sense of safety, which makes it especially helpful for this kind of practice.

As your body begins to settle, you’ll be guided to gently put words to what you’re feeling, which gives you a clearer sense of what’s going on inside. When your system feels calmer, it becomes much easier to stay with your experience and allow what you’re carrying to move through.

This is a simple, loving, and effective way to support your body, reconnect with your inner world, and build a more compassionate and embodied relationship with yourself.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of what you’re carrying, this is a gentle place to begin.
