You Can't Stop Ruminating By Thinking More

It's 11pm, and you're lying in bed replaying the same conversation for what feels like the hundredth time. You've already picked it apart from every angle. You know exactly what you should have said. And still, your mind pulls you back into it again, running the same scene … as if one more pass through the details might finally give you some relief.

If that sounds familiar, you already know how exhausting rumination is.

What you might not know is why it's so hard to stop.

You've got the insight. You've tried to reason your way out of it, more than once, and it hasn't worked.

Most of the advice out there about rumination asks us to do something with our thoughts. Reframe them. Challenge them. Distract from them. Tell ourselves the story isn't true, or isn't helpful, or isn't worth going back to again.

And for a little while, maybe some of that works. But soon enough, the loop starts back up anyway.

That's not a failure of willpower, and it's not because you're not insightful enough. It's a sign that we've been trying to solve the problem in the wrong place. Rumination isn't primarily a thinking problem, even though it shows up as thoughts. So when we try to resolve it purely by thinking harder or thinking smarter, we're working against how it actually works.

The Somatic Perspective: Our Thoughts Are Symptoms of Something Deeper

Here's the thing most of us were never taught about our thoughts: they're often happening in response to feelings living in our bodies.

From a somatic perspective, our thoughts are symptoms of something deeper going on underneath them. When a thought keeps cycling, it's usually because there's a feeling underneath it that never got fully processed, or an experience or emotion that got stirred up at some point and never had the chance to move all the way through.

That feeling is still there, living in the body, often below the level of our conscious awareness. And the mind keeps circling back to the thought because, on some level, it's still trying to resolve the feeling connected to it.

This is why we can think about something for hours, talk about it, analyze it, replay it a dozen different ways, and still feel just as stuck as when we started. Thinking about a feeling and actually feeling it are two completely different things.

Our feelings need to be felt, attuned to, and acknowledged before they can shift and release. Until that happens, the thought doesn't really have anywhere else to go but back to the beginning.

Our feelings are the actual roots of our ruminating thoughts. The thoughts themselves are more like branches. We can prune the branches all day long, but if the roots never get addressed, new branches just grow back in the same place.

What Becomes Possible When We Feel What's Beneath the Thoughts

When we start working with rumination at the level of our feelings (instead of only at the level of thought), we can actually help things deep inside resolve and move through.

Our bodies are always trying to process and complete things that they’re holding onto from the past. But they can only do that through contact with the felt sense of these experiences, not through thinking about it.

Thinking skips right over our felt sense… It jumps straight to conclusions, to labels, and to stories, which feels productive in the moment, but it leaves the actual feeling underneath untouched.

So when we finally feel our feelings, when we attune to them, listen to them, witness them, we begin to meet what's being held inside. And when it's met this way, it gets to release and move through, instead of staying stuck and sending the same thought back up again and again. The emotional charge at the root gets processed, and when that happens, our thoughts, feelings, and perceptions spontaneously shift.

This changes something in our relationship with ourselves too. Rumination often comes with so much self-judgment underneath it. We can get upset with ourselves, wondering why we can't just let something go.

But when we understand that the loop was just our body and nervous system trying to finish something, we can meet that part of ourselves with so much more compassion. Instead of judging the thoughts for coming back, we can get curious about the feeling underneath them, and offer it the kind of attention it's been waiting for.

That shift, from judgment to curiosity and care, is part of what actually allows the old feeling to finally release. We're not just quieting the loop. We're changing our relationship with the parts of ourselves that were never given the chance to be fully felt.

Feeling Your Way Out of the Loop

This week's guided meditation gives you an actual, tangible way to do this work, to finally feel the feelings that have been fueling your rumination, instead of just thinking about them one more time.

This meditation utilizes Regenerating Images in Memory®, or RIM®, a somatic emotional processing technique that helps you drop below your thoughts and get in touch with the feelings your body has been holding onto. Through gentle imagery and body awareness, RIM gives those feelings a way to finally be felt and witnessed, so they can move and release instead of staying stuck. And when those feelings resolve, the rumination can naturally soften and quiet because the actual roots of those thoughts have been tended to.

I hope you listen now and give those feelings the chance to finally be felt.
